- The National Federation of the Blind is offering a free straight fiberglass cane through the White Cane Program to individuals that are blind or visually impaired. The canes are available in the following lengths: 25, 27, 29, 31, 33, 35, 37, 39, 41, 43, 53, 55, 57, 59, 61, and 63 inches. They suggest choosing a cane length which is eight inches shorter than the cane user. Requests may be made as often as every six months.

Free White Cane Program

The white cane has proved a useful tool to millions of blind people in navigating their environments with confidence and safety. It is a tool which allows blind people to travel where and when they want, and as such leads to self-sufficiency. The NFB believes that independence and freedom to travel are so important to the quality of life of blind people that every blind person should have a cane, regardless of ability to pay.

National Federation of the Blind:

With more than 50,000 members, the National Federation of the Blind is the largest and most influential membership organization of blind people in the United States. The NFB improves blind people’s lives through advocacy, education, research, technology, and programs encouraging independence and self-confidence. It is the leading force in the blindness field today and the voice of the nation's blind. In January 2004 the NFB opened the National Federation of the Blind Jernigan Institute, the first research and training center in the United States for the blind led by the blind.

My husband went totally blind overnight, (not even light perception) and we were blessed with a free cane...but a nasty neighbor named Neva Sparks decided to break it in 3 peices when we accidentally left it in the car overnight. (She was caught on video but the police said since the cane was free to us they weren't going to do anything about it...got to love Texas, right?) So now he needs another one. I hope someone can help us... The same nasty neighbor also killed our dog, put his body in our car and admitted it to another neighbor, but again police did nothing.
