They didn't close. They made a post on their social media in May that said "Important announcement for Google Assistant users! Send Me a Sample won't be available on Google Assistant from June 13th (a Google decision, sadly). To learn how to download Alexa for free and continue getting your favourite samples, visit the link in bio."

I'm a little late to your question but here is what it says about eligibility.

"In order to be eligible for this benefit, the student must attend a school that has purchased Office organization-wide for all faculty/staff via the Microsoft Volume Licensing program."

If your email address does not work, just with your school to make sure they have "purchased Office organization-wide for all faculty/staff via the Microsoft Volume Licensing program".
