And since 2005, when they pioneered the certification process for Fair Trade Certified sugars and honeys, they have paid out over $4 million in social premiums to the cooperatives. What this means is that villages now have electricity, clean running water and access to medical care. With the help of Fair Trade premiums paid by Wholesome Sweeteners, farmers can buy land, compete with factory farms, send their children to school, and build thriving communities.
