The single-serving side lets you brew multiple cups without refilling the 40 oz. water reservoir and provides multiple brewing options.

You can brew a single cup with your favorite brand of pod (such as a K-Cup pod) or brew with ground coffee. Using a pod lets you brew up to 10 oz. of coffee, and brewing with coffee grounds lets you brew up to 14 oz. of coffee into a travel mug.
